Rowland, an insurance executive, followed his MFS education with bachelor and master’s degrees in history from Trinity College, and an M.B.A. from Washington University. Son of the revered late English and drama teacher Jean Ricketts, Rowland has stayed active with the Alumni Association over the years as a class representative and a reunion organizer. He and his sister Mary ’53 have also helped to grow the Jean N. and Dr. Rowland Ricketts Endowed Drama Fund, named after their parents, which is dedicated to the MFS theater program.

“I give to MFS for many reasons. While only attending for three years, those years hold wonderful memories and friendships that have lasted over 50 years. In hindsight, I am grateful for a quality education, which was a continuation of a rigorous curriculum and discipline from my previous school.  Both schools believed in discipline, though it was quite differently enforced. I believe I have a moral obligation to attempt to repay the favor and help MFS continue to be a source of excellence for future students. The value of a Quaker education is far broader in scope than you understand while in High School.

“In addition to the Alumni Fund, I also contribute to the fund named for my parents. They strongly believed in the Arts, especially the theatre, and hopefully their fund will keep drama alive and well at MFS for many years to come.

“MFS was a major building block of my sense of ethics and values, outlining a way in which I have tried to live my life.”
